چکیده

A metapopulation model is presented for species which can reach high population densities per patch, and for which migration is such a frequent event that it influences local patch dynamics. Depending on the local dynamics chosen and the way patch extinction is modelled, there can exist stable and bi-stable situations. The model is compared to winking-patch models, and single population models. Although, empty patches cannot exist in the model unless they are inhabitable, results comparable to those for the winkingpatch models do exist. Single population models appear to be of use to study the possible presence of a metapopulation.

A spatially structured metapopulation model with patch dynamics.

Metapopulation models that incorporate both spatial and temporal structure are studied in this paper. The existence and stability of equilibria are provided, and an extinction threshold condition is derived which depends on patch dynamics (patch destruction and creation) and metapopulation dynamics (patch colonization and extinction). These results refine threshold conditions given by previous ...

A model for a spatially structured metapopulation accounting for within patch dynamics.

We develop a stochastic metapopulation model that accounts for spatial structure as well as within patch dynamics. Using a deterministic approximation derived from a functional law of large numbers, we develop conditions for extinction and persistence of the metapopulation in terms of the birth, death and migration parameters. Interestingly, we observe the Allee effect in a metapopulation compr...

How does geographical distance translate into genetic distance?

Geographic structure can affect patterns of genetic differentiation and speciation rates. In this article, we investigate the dynamics of genetic distances in a geographically structured metapopulation. We model the metapopulation as a weighted directed graph, with N vertices corresponding to N homogeneous subpopulations. The dynamics of the genetic distances is then controlled by two types of ...

Evolutionary suicide and evolution of dispersal in structured metapopulations.

We study the evolution of dispersal in a structured metapopulation model. The metapopulation consists of a large (infinite) number of local populations living in patches of habitable environment. Dispersal between patches is modelled by a disperser pool and individuals in transit between patches are exposed to a risk of mortality. Occasionally, local catastrophes eradicate a local population: a...
